Here are five easy ways to bring a taste of the Mediterranean into your living room.
1) Whitewash or colourwash your walls.
Mediterranean living is all about simplicity. White walls will give your interior a fresh backdrop to which you can then add colours by way of home accessories. If you prefer to add some colour to your walls, give them a colourwash in a typical Mediterranean colour. And for an on-trend twist, you could paint them (or wallpaper them) in a striking ombre effect.
2) Add texture.
To balance the intensity of the white and give your room depth, add some texture. An easy way to do this is with some soft furnishings like cushions, throws and rugs.
3) Use home accessories to add colour.
Add touches of colour to your decor through the addition of a few home accessories such as cushions, vases and bowls. But don’t clutter your space, simplicity is the key. Mediterranean colours reflect the colours of the region. The turquoise blue of the sea, rich earthly terracotta and browns, leaf green, sunshine yellow and metallics in copper and gold.
4) Bring the outside in.
Mediterranean living blurs the boundaries between the outside and inside to harmonise your environment. So add some organic elements to your living room like potted plants or fresh flowers. They’ll bring your room to life and colour to your decor.
5) Wood and natural materials.
Mediterranean decor features a predominant use of natural materials – especially wood. Wooden furnishings add warmth and work as a great balance with the white. A wooden coffee table or shelves would work perfectly. Also think about including some rustic natural elements into your scheme. You could have a carved wooden fruit bowl or use a sculptural stone as a doorstop.
